New Grads When to Take The Job Offer and When to Keep Looking

New Grads When to Take The Job Offer and When to Keep LookingNew Grads When to Take The Job Offer and When to Keep LookingIf you are one of the 1.85 million students entering the workforce after graduation this year, you may have received your job offer in April. It might seem like youve got it made if you got an offer before graduation. Theres nothing left to do but graduate, travel and get to work. (If you didnt, dont despair. Simply Hired data shows job listings targeted toward new grads will peak again in July and October.)Many new grads wonder if they should continue interviewing, hunting and networking after they receive an offer in hopes of getting a better one. Heres a breakdown of the pros and cons that come with job hunting after youve landed a job offer.Benefits of Going with the First Job OfferThere are several reasons that it might be in your best interest to settle for the first job offer. First, you can save yourself a lot of hassle. If you know that this is the best o pportunity for you based on your needs for company culture, salary, benefits and location, then accepting your first offer will save you time, stress and money.Next, you can avoid an uncomfortable philosophical trap. Pursuing the thought that Perhaps theres a better offer out there can lead to an endless drain on your plans and your emotions. You may even talk yourself out of a legitimately good offer or ignore opportunities that will more than meet your needs to chase the elusive perfect opportunity. Finally, fully committing to the job offer you receive allows you to invest that time and energy into the workplace youre soon to be part of. Instead of spending time learning the names of potential interviewers, you can start building connections and relationships with people youll actually be working with.Disadvantages of Settling for the First Job OfferThe most obvious disadvantage of settling with your first job offer is that you might miss out on a better offer. What if your dream company is mucksmuschenstill out there, and you dont know it? What if companies in other areas are hiring at significantly higher entry-level salaries? Or what if the perfect opportunity is waiting for you, but it doesnt exist yet because the company is expanding and the company wont list the position for another 30 days?Settling for the first job offer could also put you at a uninformed disadvantage. Without interviewing and receiving other offers, you dont have any firm numbers or benefits to compare. Youre stuck relying on outdated or anonymous industry data to determine whether or not your offer is competitive, and you certainly dont have the pull to negotiate hard. Finally, your network is just growing as a new grad. If you settle for the first offer that comes along, youll miss out on taking in more learning and networking opportunities by interviewing at more companies within your industry. Ive often heard stories about people recognizing and assisting other people who sat in on their interview committees many years prior. You simply never know who could help you in your career 15 years down the line or vice-versa.Ethics and Manners for Continuing Your Job Hunt If you decide to continue looking for a job after accepting a job offer, you should abide by the same professional rules that govern your initial job search.Always be honest. If someone asks if youve accepted an offer (or if your new company asks if youre still looking) tell the truth in a straightforward and professional way. Work in the phrase, I am always interested in understanding the market value of my skills, to reassure your future employer that youre not necessarily trying to get out of their offer but simply gathering information.See beyond salaries. Companies are notoriously less flexible when it comes to negotiating entry-level, new grad salaries. Keep an eye out for the benefits youre looking for a competitive field or industry, autonomy and the interest level of the work itself. Loo k beyond the salary numbers of each offer to see how each offer will affect your quality of life and career trajectory.Give notice if you change your mind. If you do discover an offer that is a better fit for you, give as much notice as possible. The employer will need to invest resources and time into securing a replacement, and the last thing you want to do as a new grad is burn bridges that you may need in the future.Understand your positioning. If you decide to pursue other offers, try to identify exactly what youre looking for. Is it all about the numbers? If you find a better offer, and your current employer provides a counter-offer, will that change your mind? Explore the circumstances under which you would stay with your second or first offers. Are you on the job hunt with an offer in hand? How to Sell Yourself to a Hiring Manager

How to Sell Yourself to a Hiring ManagerHow to Sell Yourself to a Hiring Manager Youre ready to make a change, so you throw your hat in the ring for a few opportunities that look interesting. You quickly get a couple of calls to set up bewerbungsinterviews, talk to a couple of hiring managers, andyou dont hear back. This is frustrating because the company wouldnt interview you if you didnt look like a reasonable candidate on paper or if you didnt come with a recommendation from your professional network. So your resume and recommendations are strong enough to get interviews, but then the opportunities just sort of dry up.This is alfruchtwein always a sign that you need better positioning .Your job interviews are a part of your negotiation. The better you perform, the better your offer will be and the better youll be able make your case when you begin the formal salary negotiation.Every question youre asked is a chance to move them in this direction. Imagine you have a power meter that fills up a little more every time you give a great answer to an interview question. The more full that power meter is when they make you an offer, the better the offer will be.Once you get into your interviews your job is to change the companys thinking from Whats the extremum we can offer this candidate to get them into this role? to Whats it going to take to convince this candidate to take this job?See the difference? You want to shift their thinking from Whats the minimum salary we can offer? to Whats it going to take?Positioning is how you describe yourself as the hero this company needs, turning your skillset and experience into superpowers by matching them with the outcomes the business wants.Lets illustrate this with an example you may have experienced Lets say youve applied for a job as a software developer and youre being interviewed by someone on the gruppe you might work with.Suddenly, youre asked a common interview question that scares most peopleYoure d efinitely qualified for the job, but this question catches you off guard, so you freeze up and say something like thisMaybe you elaborate a bit and mention the school you went to or the programming languages youre familiar with. But in the end, your answer doesnt really tell the interviewer anything new or compelling.Youre not alone- thats what most people would say They might use more words, but their answer boils down to I read the job description and I think I can do that job.Heres what your answer might sound like when you leveraging strong positioning to stand out as the candidate for the jobYoure transitioning your application to Ruby on Rails, and Ive been using Ruby on Rails for production client projects for two years. I can save your team a lot of time because I can start writing production code right away.Well, hello there Thats a compelling answer that will impress your interviewer and significantly increase your chances of getting another interview and ultimately gettin g a high-quality job offer. And theres a straightforward process you can follow to consistently give strong answers like the second one.In a nutshell, positioning is how you show a company that youre the person they need for a specific job.But how do you do that? How did the Software Developer know the company was transitioning their application to Ruby on Rails?Youll start with basic research and careful preparation for your interviews. Your goal is to learn enough about the company and job youre pursuing so that you understand exactly what they need. Once you have that information, will tell them why you are exactly what they need.Heres a short list of things you should look for as you discover exactly what the company needsKnowing that information before you go into an interview will help you be prepared to talk about the specific company and job youre considering. And, more importantly, youll be able to tell a more detailed story about how their company will be better if youre a part of it.So where do you start? There are three main places where youll find pretty much everything you need their company website,Google and Glassdoor .This doesnt need to be complicated- youre simply doing the work that others wont do. Here are the types of information youre looking forIn general, bigger companies will have more information available than smaller companies. Thats ok. For now, all youre doing is building a list of data sources you can use.Use the short list of above to discover exactly what the company needs. Most of the information is publicly available, and some companies will have more information than others. But thats ok because you just need basic information to get through the first interview or two. This is the key question you want to answer before your interviews. When you can tell the hiring manager how youll help the company or team achieve its goals and address its challenges, they will want to hire you.Remember, theyre interviewing you because they need to fill an open position. That position is open because the company has needs or challenges that the person who does that job will help address. So when you tell them that youll help them address those needs and challenges, and you tell them how youll do it, youre saying, I am the candidate you opened this job for.Lets go back to the very beginning. The question were considering isMost people are intimidated by this question because its so vague and open-ended. Usually, theyll say something like, Because Im a software developer.A more experienced interviewer might say something likeIve been in this industry for 10 years, and I worked on a major project for ACME Corp and carried a lot of responsibility there. I also have experience managing teams and I have published five white papers on various topics. But look at who this candidate is talking about Ive, I, I, I.Dont just talk about yourself. Talk about how you can help the company achieve its goals or address its pain points. Youll still say I, but youll say it in the context of you. This is a softball question, the perfect setup for you to tell them how youll help them meet one of their goals or resolve a challenge theyre having Take advantage of itIf youve done your research before the interview, then the first thing youll do when confronted with this question is think, What is their most urgent need or challenge? It will probably be pretty obvious since youve spent time reading about their company, but its ok to just pick something from your list if there isnt any particular outstanding one.Now that youve identified their most urgent need, ask yourself, How can I help them address that need? Youve already been thinking about this before the interview, so its a slam dunk. Then you put them together into a nice, short answer that tells them how youll help them address their most urgent need with your skillset and experience. When companies hire people, they have a range theyre able to pay to fill the posit ion, and theyre more inclined to pay at the higher end of that range if they find the right candidate. You want to be that candidate. Before we wrap up, lets jump back to the software developer example we saw earlier. Now that you know how to use positioning to answer interview questions, see if you can spot the need and how the developer describes the solution when asked Why should we hire you?Youre transitioning your application to Ruby on Rails, and Ive been using Ruby on Rails for production client projects for two years. I can save your team a lot of time because I can start writing production code right away.Do you see it now? This answer is much more focused on the company and their needs. The most urgent need this developer identified was a big transition to a new technology. The developer could directly help address that need because he had a few years experience with that specific technology. All he had to do was tell the interviewer how he could help meet that need.Thats an excellent use of positioning to answer a tricky interview question.Lets go back to our Positioning definition from the beginning of this seriesPositioning is how you describe yourself as the hero this company needs, turning your skillset and experience into superpowers by matching them with the outcomes the business wants. For each opportunity you pursue, do the research described above, and consider the companys goals and challenges. Then think about how you can use your skillset and experience to help the company address those goals and challenges.Do that for every opportunity and youll stand out from other candidates and get more high-quality job offers.A version of this article was originally published on FearlessSalaryNegotiation.com . This Is What Your LinkedIn Photo Should Look Like

This Is What Yur LinkedIn Photo Should Look LikeThis Is What The Ideal LinkedIn Photo Looks Like (+ 6 Tips To Perfect Yours)Posted June 16, 2016, by Zahra Campbell-AvenellWeve all agonised over our LinkedIn profile does my headshot look professional enough? Does it still convey my personality? Fret no mora Below youll find profile picture examples that will help you project the right impression. From how to smile to which poses to avoidheres how to take the perfect profile pic. There is some serious internet stalking going on these days. I dont mean the sinister kind I mean the regular, everydayGoogling kind. Have you ever looked up someones LinkedIn profile before you met them? A client? A future employer? A prospective employee? A whopping eight mio Australians use LinkedIn, so its probably not surprising that your LinkedIn profile is probably the first result people will find when they Google you. Over 90% of employers use social media to recruit candidates, but even if youre n ot actively looking for a job, you cant afford to ignore your visual representation in the digital world. Your LinkedIn profile is a great way to take control of your business identity and personal brand. More than ever, its crucial to have a strong LinkedIn profile, as its often your best chance to make a good first impression. Having a LinkedIn photo makes your profile 14 times mora likely to be viewed, but what is that photo saying about you? A study by Princeton University psychologists suggests it only takes a tenth of a second to form an impression based on a photo of a person. Even when participants had longer to study a photo, they didnt significantly change their initial conclusions. Clearly then were all at the mercy of peoples snap judgements for what our photos convey about our social and business skills. Yikes So how do you convince people that youre competent, capable and likeable through a photo? Theres good news researchers at Photofeeler, a profile photo t esting tool, have done the hard yards for us. They analysed over 60,000 ratings of perceived competence, likeability and influence for over 800 profile photos, and heres what they foundThis is the perfect profile picture. What makes this great, and how can you make yours look just as good? Here are some tips on how to put your best digital face forward1. Say cheeseA smile is a powerful tool it makes you look more approachable, attractive and trustworthy. So you should definitely smile in your photo just as you would if you met a business contact in real life. But what kind of smile? Interestingly, nothing will have more impact on your apparent likeability than showing your teeth when you smile (bonus a toothy grin also increases scores for competence and influence). The study found that a closed mouth smile had no impact on competence and influence, and welches only half as likely to make you look more likeable. But dont overdo it Laughing in your picture may increase your likeabil ity, but at the expense of looking competent and influential. It might be good to smize for your modelling portfolio, but not for LinkedIn2. But remember to squinch a littleMade famous by photographer Peter Hurley, the squinch technique involves gently squinting as you smile. This has been shown to make people look more confident, as it mimics a natural smile. Moreover, a squinch was shown to increase peoples perceived competence and influence.A slight smile without your teeth showing could make you seem less likeableSquinch? Check. Toothy Smile? Check. Likeability - through the roofLaughing in your LinkedIn photo may be overkill...it may increase likeability, but not your apparent competence or influence3. Make eye contactEyes are the window to the soul, after all and you dont want to seem like a soulless freak, do you? Blocking the eyes brought down scores for likeability, competence and influence. So sunglasses are a definite no-no, but wearing glasses was shown to increase perce ived competence and likeability. So if you wear glasses, go ahead and wear them for your LinkedIn photoDont obstruct your eyes for your LinkedIn shots4. Wear formal clothingPerhaps its not all that surprising that dressing for success can actually make you appear and be more successful. Wearing formal clothing had the largest gains in perceived competence and influence. So even if you work in a less formal industry, its a good idea to pull your suit out of its dry cleaning plastic to take your LinkedIn photo. Remember, its a professional networking site so dont make your casual appearance make colleagues, clients, recruiters and hiring managers swipe left.Wearing informal clothing makes you look less professional and less competent5. Show your face (but not your idiosyncrasies)The study found that a bust (head and shoulders) or torso (head to waist) shot is preferable to a close-up of the face or a full-body shot. This isnt the place to get quirky either, so no funny faces, two t humbs up or thoughtfully stroking your chin these are likely to make you look cheesy and detract from your professional persona. Its a good idea to keep your hands off your face6. Look at the camera head onIt should go without saying, but LinkedIn really isnt the place for mirror selfies, with your head cocked sideways and your best duckface. So even if youre accustomed to tilting your head when you have a photo taken, try to straighten your head, stick out your jaw to make it more defined (another Peter Hurley trick) and make eye contact with the camera.Cocking your head to one side makes you appear less competentHaving a stellar LinkedIn profile is just as important as an updated resume or cover letter, whether or not youre in the job market. So dont underestimate that tiny little square that is often your first impression in the digital world.Found this article helpful? 7 challenges smart people choose to overcome

7 challenges smart people choose to overcome7 challenges smart people choose to overcomeIts truly fascinating how smart, successful people approach aufgabes. Where others see impenetrable barriers, they see challenges to embrace and obstacles to overcome.Their confidence in the face of hardship is driven by the ability to let go of the negativity that holds so many otherwise sensible people back.Martin Seligman at the University of Pennsylvania has studied this phenomenon mora than anyone else has, and hes found that success in life is driven by one critical distinction- whether you believe that yur failures are produced by personal deficits beyond your control or that they are mistakes you can fix with effort.Success isnt the only thing determined by your mindset. Seligman has found much higher rates of depression in people who attribute their failures to personal deficits. Optimists fare better they treat failure as learning experiences and believe they can do better in the future. This success mindset requires emotional intelligence (EQ), and its no wonder that, among the million-plus people that TalentSmart has tested, 90% of top performers have high EQs.Maintaining the success mindset isnt easy. There are seven things, in particular, that tend to shatter it. These challenges drag people down because they appear to be barriers that cannot be overcome. Not so for smart people, as these challenges never hold them back.AgeAge really is just a number. Smart people dont let their age define who they are and what they are capable of. Just ask Betty White or any young, thriving entrepreneur. I remember a professor in graduate school who told our class that we were all too young and inexperienced to do consulting work. He said we had to go work for another company for several years before we could hope to succeed as independent consultants. I was the youngest person in the class, and I sat there doing work for my consulting clients while he droned on. Without fail, people feel compelled to tell you what you should and shouldnt do because of your age. Dont listen to them. Smart people certainly dont. They follow their heart and allow their passion - not the body theyre living in - to be their guide. They follow their heart and allow their passion - not the body theyre living in - to be their guide.NegativityLife wont always go the way you want it to, but when it comes down to it, you have the same 24 hours in the day as everyone else does. Smart people make their time count. Instead of complaining about how things could have been or should have been, they reflect on everything they have to be grateful for. Then they find the best solution available, tackle the problem, and move on.When the negativity comes from someone else, smart people avoid it by setting limits and distancing themselves from it. Think of it this wayIf the complainer were smoking, would you sit there all afternoon inhaling the second-hand smoke?Of course not. Youd distance yourself, and you should do the same with all negative people.A great way to stop complainers in their tracks is to ask them how they intend to fix the problem theyre complaining about. They will either quiet down or redirect the conversation in a productive direction.Toxic peopleSmart people believe in a simple notion you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Just think about it - some of the most successful companies in recent history were founded by brilliant pairs. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple lived in the same neighborhood, Bill Gates and Paul Allen of Microsoft met in prep school, and Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google met at Stanford.Just as great people help you to reach your full potential, toxic people drag you right down with them. Whether its negativity, cruelty, the victim syndrome, or just plain craziness, toxic people create stress and strife that should be avoided at all costs. If youre unhappy with where you are in your life, j ust take a look around. More often than not, the people youve surrounded yourself with are the root of your problems.Youll never reach your peak until you surround yourself with the right people. What other people thinkWhen your sense of pleasure and satisfaction are derived from comparing yourself to others, you are no longer the master of your own destiny. While its impossible to turn off your reactions to what others think of you, you dont have to hold up your accomplishments to anyone elses, and you can always take peoples opinions with a grain of salt. That way, no matter what other people are thinking or doing, your self-worth comes from within.Smart people know that caring about what other people think is a waste of time and energy. When smart people feel good about something that theyve done, they dont let anyones opinions take that away from them.No matter what other people think of you at any particular moment, one thing is certain - youre never as good or bad as they say you are.FearFear is nothing more than a lingering emotion thats fueled by your imagination. Danger is real. Its the uncomfortable rush of adrenaline you get when you almost step in front of a bus. Fear is a choice. Smart people know this better than anyone does, so they flip fear on its head. They are addicted to the euphoric feeling they get from conquering their fears.Dont ever hold back in life just because you feel scared. I often hear people say, Whats the worst thing that can happen to you? Will it kill you? Yet, death isnt the worst thing that can happen to you The worst thing that can happen to you is allowing yourself to die inside while youre still alive. The past or the futureLike fear, the past and the future are products of your mind. No amount of guilt can change the past, and no amount of anxiety can change the future. Smart people know this, and they focus on living in the present moment. Its impossible to reach your full potential if youre constantly somewhere else, unable to fully embrace the reality (good or bad) of this very moment. To live in the moment, you must do two things1) Accept your past. If you dont make peace with your past, it will never leave you and it will create your future. Smart people know the only good time to look at the past is to see how far youve come.2) Accept the uncertainty of the future, and dont place unnecessary expectations upon yourself. Worry has no place in the here and now. As Mark Twain once said,Worrying is like paying a debt you dont owe.The state of the worldKeep your eyes on the news for any length of time and youll see its just one endless cycle of war, violent attacks, fragile economies, failing companies, and environmental disasters. Its easy to think the world is headed downhill fast. And who knows? Maybe it is. But smart people dont worry about that because they dont get caught up in things they cant control. Instead, they focus their energy on directing the two things that are completely within the ir power - their attention and their effort. They focus their attention on all the things theyre grateful for, and they look for the good thats happening in the world. They focus their effort on doing what they can every single day to improve their own lives and the world around them, because these small steps are all it takes to make the world a better place. They focus their effort on doing what they can every single day to improve their own lives and the world around them Bringing it all togetherYour success is driven by your mindset. With discipline and focus, you can ensure that these seven obstacles never hold you back from reaching your full potential. What other challenges do smart people overcome? What to Do When You Have Been Fired

What to Do When You Have Been Fired What to Do When You Have Been Fired Steve Jobs. J.K. Rowling. Walt Disney. Oprah. What do all these famous people have in common? They’ve all been fired. If you’re currently staring at your own pink slip- or anticipating one in the near future- you can take a tiny bit of comfort in knowing that you’re in illustrious company. To set yourself up for a second act that’s as impressive as theirs, you need to do a little preparation. That means taking a deep breath, getting yourself together, and looking at your situation. If you’re like most people, you have a lot of questions. Are you eligible for unemployment? Can you appeal? What happens if you have been wrongfully discharged? What do you say in your cover letters and job interviews?Heres what you need to know about your employee rights, your financial options, and your best path forward when you are fired or otherwise terminated from employment. 01 Termination Checklist: Do This Right Now When you’ve lost your job, its important to check- right away- on compensation due, benefits, references, and unemployment. If you have been fired and havent been informed about benefits, contact the Human Resources department at your former employer or your manager to request information on the status of your benefits. Follow this checklist to make sure you have covered all the bases. 02 What to Do in the Days After You’ve Been Fired The day you get fired, your focus will waver between the immediate (“I just got fired. What do I do now?”) and the very long-term (“Is my career over?”). To keep from getting lost in the details or psyching yourself out, it helps to have a plan. This step-by-step list tells you what you need to know when you have been fired from your job- and what to focus on today, tomorrow, and so on.   03 Things Not to Say (or Do) If You're Fired We’ve all seen it in movies: the hero gets fired from his job, makes a big scene that either embarrasses his evil boss or sets the hero up for eventual redemption and then stomps out of the office, accompanied by stirring music. That makes for great drama, but if you try to replicate it in real life, you’ll notice that it’s a lot less satisfying without the soundtrack and flattering lights.Bottom line, there’s a right way to behave after getting fired- and a lot of stuff you shouldn’t say or do, lest you make a bad situation worse. Avoid these common mistakes.   04 Does My Employer Have to Provide Notice of Termination? Short answer: probably not. When an employee is terminated or laid-off, there are no federal regulations requiring employers to give advance notice to the employee unless the employee is covered by an individual contract with their employer, a union/collective bargaining agreement, or the WARN Act. If you’re like the majority of workers, these probably don’t apply to you- in which case, your employer is free to terminate you on the spot.   05 Were You Fired for Cause? When an employee is terminated for cause, they are fired from their job for a specific reason, for example, being chronically late, stealing, spending too much on social media, or having a bad attitude. It’s important to figure out whether you were fired for cause- as opposed to being laid off- because it may determine whether you’re eligible for unemployment. Heres how to handle being terminated for cause.   06 Can You Collect Unemployment? Don’t assume that being fired means that you’re ineligible for unemployment. Depending on the circumstances, you could still qualify. The exception is if you were fired for misconduct, but you can always apply because your perception of your work history may be different than your employers.   07 What Is Wrongful Termination? Wrongful termination happens when an employee is discharged from employment for illegal reasons or if company policy is violated when the employee is fired. If you were wrongly terminated, you ?may be able to appeal the decision. Heres how to tell if you were wrongfully terminated- and what you can do about it.   08 Employee Rights Regardless of how you were terminated, it’s important to know your rights. Depending on which state you live in, whether you’re working under a contract, or as an at-will employee, and how the employer typically handles terminations, your rights will vary. 09 How to Answer the Interview Question, “Why Were You Fired?” Getting fired isn’t the end of the world, even if it feels like it on the day you receive your termination. Handled correctly, it can be a minor bump in the road of your career. Here’s how to handle the inevitable job interview questions about your termination honestly and positively, so that you can move on to your next adventure.   10 Job Termination Questions and Answers Here are  answers to the most frequently asked questions about termination from employment, including reasons for getting fired, employee rights when you have been terminated, collecting unemployment, wrongful termination, saying goodbye to co-workers and more.

Your brain on skim reading

Your brain on skim reading Your brain on skim reading Deep reading is dying.Today, digital content overload is turning us into a world of skim-readers with consequences for this generation and the next one.Modern-day reading is still evolving. The brain’s ability to read is rapidly changing.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Skimming allows you to look for details in addition to the main ideas.Michael S. Rosenwald  reports  in the  Washington Post  that, according to cognitive neuroscientists, humans seem to be developing digital brains with new circuits for skimming through content at the expense of deep reading. Many people are developing a skill to skim-read.They read the first few lines of an article, then quickly spot certain words or phrases they find valuable rather than take in the whole text. They hone in on what is important to their purpose.American psychiatrist Edward Hallowell, explains, “never in human history, our brains had to work so much information as today. We have now a generation of people who spend many hours in front of a computer monitor or a cell phone and who are so busy in processing the information received from all directions, so they lose the ability to think and feel. Most of this information is superficial. People are sacrificing the depth and feeling and cut off from other people.”Deep reading takes time. Reading slowly to comprehend information is not cognitively easy for many people.Attention is exhausting. When attention is limited, skimming rules. When you embrace skimming, the brain builds a system to lower the cognitive load to maximise brain energy.Every minute on an article is a minute not spent doing something else, hence the need to find real value in a piece before spending more time reading it.How do you know if this article is actually good and worth your time? You don’t, so you skim.Skimming becomes the only option when you are bombarded with headlines from hundreds, if not thousands, of news sources. It’s probably the best way to sift through the insane amount of content produced daily. It’s a fundamental reading skill for a lot of people who need to find valuable information in the shortest possible time.I skim daily to find relevant ideas that inform my work.Of course, if I skim an article and find it interesting, switching over to slow comprehensive reading is the next step to find even more valuable information. The reading brain in a digital  worldReading actually changes the wiring of the brain.Read (deeply or skimming) changes our brain’s ability to comprehend, analyse, and evaluate information. The quality of your reading has a huge impact on how you think.Research shows  that reading helps with fluid intelligence, comprehension and emotional intelligence.Reading involves several brain functions, including visual and auditory processes, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension, and more.According to the ongoing research at  Haskins Laboratories for the Science of the Spoken and Written Word, reading, unlike watching or listening to media, gives the brain more time to stop, think, process, and imagine the narrative.Deep reading (attentive reading, absorbing, understanding and analysing text) expands a reader’s attention span.A  study  published in the  Annual Review of Psychology  found overlap in brain regions used to comprehend stories and interact with others.Today, technology is changing our brains. We are getting better at parsing information in digital contexts and losing the benefits of deep reading. We are also losing deep attention and focus.“Skimming has led to a tendency to go to the sources that seem the simplest, most reduced, most familiar, and least cognitively challenging,” says Maryanne Wolf, author of “Reader Come Home: The Reading Brain In A Digital World.”With so much online information, our brains form shortcuts to deal with it all- scanning, searching for valuable phras es, scrolling up and down quickly. We’re spending so much time scrolling, bookmarking, pushing, linking, and jumping through text that when we sit down with a great book, our skimming habits interfere with our reading process. For many people who are accustomed to skim-reading digital content, they are likely to avoid reading anything that appears difficult or hard to understand. In her book,  Reader Come Home: The Reading Brain In A Digital World, Maryanne seeks to understand what’s happening to our brains at a time when information overload is increasingly becoming a problem for many people. She writes:“Do you, my reader, read with less attention and perhaps even less memory for what you have read? Do you notice when reading on a screen that you are increasingly reading for key words and skimming over the rest? Has this habit or style of screen reading bled over to your reading of hard copy? Do you find yourself reading the same passage over and over to understand its meaning?â €Maryanne’s concerns are real and practical in the 21st century.Skimming is so common that, many people can’t make time to slowly read a great book. They are in effect wiring their brains for better skimming at the expense of deep reading. As you improve your skimming habit, your brain gradually avoids denser, more complex analyses, even those that are readily available. At some point, you will no longer have the cerebral patience to plow through a long and demanding article or book unless you are really interested in the topic. With time, you won’t find the same enveloping pleasure you once derived from your former reading self.“…critical analysis, empathy and other deep reading processes could become the unintended “collateral damage” of our digital culture,”  says  Maryanne. It pays to pause and reflect on the impact of your skimming habit on your deep reading skill.Your ability to process information deeply and critically shouldn’t suffer.Closing thoughtsThe brain is constantly adapting. You can benefit from both skimming and deep reading if you embrace the two habits. There are advantages to both ways of reading. There is potential for a bi-literate brain. How you read is a choice. It’s as simple as picking up an actual, physical book or skimming an article.By all means, read, but choose to exercise your empathy, strengthen your critical thinking, attention span, and heighten your appreciation for a great book.Cultivate a new kind of brain to benefit from both deep reading and skimming. The combination of these two methods has immense value for your adaptable brain.  This article first appeared on Medium.  You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Leadership presence for women is it really any different

Leadership presence for women is it really any different Leadership presence for women is it really any different I have been speaking on the topic of leadership presence for several years, but only lately created a program designed for women â€" and the question I get most often is, “Why focus on women?” My answer is, as they say in the commercial, “Because we’re worth it!”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! We’re highly educated.  According to the National Center for Education Statistics, women make up more than  56%  of college students nationwide. We increase innovation. An economist from Carnegie Mellon found that teams that included at least one female member had a collectively higher IQ than teams that had just men.We make organizations more profitable.  The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology recently published a paper called  The Case for Investing in Women  detailing the huge difference that women make in the workforce. One of their findings is that in Fortu ne 500 companies with at least three female directors, the return on invested capital jumped over 66%, return on sales went up 42%, and return on equity increased by 53%.But here’s the rub. Leadership presence doesn’t automatically come with your education, your talent for innovation, or your business results. Instead, leadership presence is entirely subjective. It depends on how others perceive you. Women face unique challenges when it comes to being perceived as leaders. The most pervasive obstacles are Unconscious Bias, the Double-Bind Paradox, and the Imposter Syndrome.Few people would consciously think that a woman can’t be a leader. But Unconscious Bias appears in numerous studies. For example, when researchers ask both men and women to draw a picture of a leader, they’ll almost always draw a male figure. The Double-Bind Paradox states that as males rise in rank and status at work, they retain (and often increase) their perceived likeability â€" so they can be both powe rful and likable. But when women project status and authority in order to advance in the business world - the more powerful they appear, the less they are liked. Catalyst, an organization that studies women in leadership, calls this the “dammed if you do, doomed if don’t” dilemma. The Imposter Syndrome is the fear of being exposed as a fraud, of feeling unworthy of your success. While both genders experience it, a female’s self-doubt is more likely to negatively impact her career when she doesn’t exhibit the self-confidence expected in a leader. For example, internal research by Hewlett-Packard found that women only apply for jobs for which they feel they are a 100% match; men apply even when they meet no more than 60% of the requirements. To complicate matters further, women fall into verbal and nonverbal communication traps that rob them of presence. Here are three of those traps:Trap #1 â€" Sending nonverbal submission signalsSometimes it’s as simple as the tilt of you r head. Tilting your head to one side is a warm (“pro-social”) signal that you are listening and involved.  As such, head tilts can be very empathetic and inclusive. But they are also subconsciously processed as submission signals. (Dogs tilt their heads to expose their necks, as a way to show deference to the dominant animal.)Continue using head tilts when you want to demonstrate your concern for and interest in members of your team or when you want to encourage people to expand on what they are saying. But when you need to project power and confidence - asking for a promotion or giving a presentation to the executive team or board of directors - keep your head straight up in a more neutral (and authoritative) position.Trap #2 â€" Looking less than you areHere’s how most women sit around a conference table in a business meeting: Legs are crossed, elbows into waist, hands together on lap, shoulders slightly rounded. In other words, women condense their bodies. If you find yo urself in this posture, realize that it could be depleting your leadership presence by making you look less confident, less professional, and less powerful than you really are.Confidence and authority are non-verbally demonstrated by claiming height and space. If you are sitting, you can still project power by sitting straight with both feet on the floor (which makes you look and feel “grounded”), by hooking one arm over the back of your chair, by making more open arm gestures, or by spreading out your belongings on the conference table to claim more territory.Remember, also, that if everyone is seated, standing when you speak gives you instant status by becoming - for the moment â€" the tallest person in the room. And if you move around, the additional space you take up adds to that impression.Trap #3 â€" Staying invisibleThe head of Human Resources told me that the saddest comment he hears when executives are evaluating potential candidates for high-level positions is, “I h ave no idea who she is.” I think this happens more often with female candidates because we are more likely to adopt a “good student” mentality â€" in which we believe that if we just keep our heads down and do good work, others are bound to notice and reward us.Apparently, that’s not the case.Research with senior leaders in Silicon Valley found that the top criterion for promotion was visibility. One savvy female executive stated it this way: “It’s not enough to be a legend in your own mind. You need to make others aware of your talents and accomplishments.”So ask yourself: Are the executives in your company aware of your talents and accomplishments? If not, you need to increase your visibility by volunteering for key projects, offering to give presentations, publicizing your team’s accomplishments, and taking an active part in your professional associations. You need to broaden and deepen your network and look for mentors and sponsors who will guide and help promote you. Because as gifted as you may be, your leadership presence can only be built by getting out there and letting others see you in action. But back to the original question: Is leadership presence for women really any different? What do you think?Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. She’s the author of “The Silent Language of Leaders” and creator of LinkedInLearning’s video series: “Body Language for Leaders.” For more information, visit  CarolKinseyGoman.com.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Law Firm Rankings Are Meaningful

Law Firm Rankings Are Meaningful Law Firm Rankings Are Meaningful Over the last few months there have been several attacks of The American Lawyer’s rankings of the 200 highest grossing firms in the country.   In a video  posted on Bloomberg’s Big Law Business blog, law firm consultant Bruce MacEwen criticized the AmLaw 200, stating: “I've realized over the last few years that I think that category, the AmLaw 200, is increasingly meaningless as a conceptual category. It leads us into the mistake of thinking that all these firms are the same and they're not remotely the same.”   MacEwen claimed that a list cannot be both comprehensive and heterogeneous and not involve unspoken value judgments and further that the AmLaw 200 cannot survive scrutiny. A few weeks later, Kimberly Kleman, Editor-in-Chief of The American Lawyer, struck back with her own video response, saying, “you can compare things that are not alike, people do that all the time. To say that, well, these two things are different … so you can't compare any of them doesn't make sense to me.”   She further stated that without publicly available data law firm clients would be sent back to the days of law firms presenting smoke and mirrors and clients not knowing what the basis of their fees was. MacEwen and Kleman eventually sat down for a cup of coffee together to amicably discuss what the American Lawyer should be covering (it was Kleman’s treat).   But soon afterward, Kleman launched another attack, this time strongly suggesting that the data that firms provide to The American Lawyer and that form the basis of the AmLaw 200 is not entirely accurate. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I come down on AmLaw’s side here.   To claim you can’t fairly compare large law firms with different business models and geographic footprints is absurd.   Large law firms are fundamentally in the same business, are competing for the same pools of clients, and are competing for the same talent.   Published data on law firm profitability is an important criterion upon which potential clients and potential associates may judge a law firm. Just as AmLaw provides an important service in providing profitability data, Vault provides prospective new law firm associates and laterals an opportunity to pull back the curtain and learn what those in the know, the associates working at the firms, have to say about their firm and about the firms with which they collaborate and compete.   Our prestige, quality of life, and diversity rankings- when taken together with our survey results and firm profiles- provide the most comprehensive information on what it is like to actually practice law at these firms. The OCI and callback interview process is difficult on many law students.   Students just a year into their law school careers are asked to choose a firm where they will likely start their career and practice for at least a few years.   When I was a 2L going through this process, I couldn’t tell the difference between Baker Botts and Baker Hostetler and I treasured the Vault rankings and reviews to cut through the noise.   The firms in the Vault Law 100 and the AmLaw200 are very different, and to me, that’s just the point.   Because to listen only to the firms and to read just their marketing materials, you often wouldn’t know that.  Rankings, survey data, and reviews help law students, attorneys, and clients learn more about law firms, and that transparency is good not only for these groups but also for the firms and the legal industry as a whole. This is the solution to your insignificant life

This is the solution to your insignificant life This is the solution to your insignificant life Have you ever seen a hamster in a Habitrail cage? When I was a boy, I had a buddy who owned two hamsters. They lived in Habitrail cages, which are plastic containers with connecting tubes and exercise wheels.During the day, the hamsters slept a lot and occasionally ate. At night, they scurried through their tubes and ran forever on their exercise wheels. The hamsters had their routines, but it all looked mindless to me.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! All images by John WeissPeople are a lot like hamsters. We spend a good deal of our lives sleeping, eating and then scurrying off to work. We labor forever on our career treadmills. It can seem pretty mindless, just like those hamsters on their exercise wheels. Over time, a lot of folks lose their sense of purpose and meaning. They succumb to the vast torrent of daily meetings, deadlines, tasks and soul-crushing mediocrity. They give up.Booze, drugs and sex might fill the void for some, but the escape is temporary. Soon, Monday morning arrives and everyone gets back on their treadmills.Mortgages have to be paid. The kids need braces. Decisions for matters small and large seem endless. So we soldier on. Working, raising our kids, trying to eat right and exercise more. But deep down, we sense something long forgotten in our hearts. The significance of  livingMy father used to have a short meditation by  Howard Thurman  framed on his office wall. As a boy, I had no idea who Howard Thurman was. We didn’t have the internet back then.Today, if you look up Howard Thurman on Wikipedia, you’ll learn that he:“…was an influential African-American author, philosopher, theologian, educator, and  civil rights  leader. As a prominent religious figure, he played a leading role in many  social justice  movements and organizations of the twentieth century. Thurman’s theology of radical nonviolence influenced and shap ed a generation of civil rights activists, and he was a key mentor to leaders within the movement, including  Martin Luther King, Jr.”Fast forward a lifetime. My father passed on, and many of his office items were boxed up in storage. For years they hibernated in a dark cabinet in my mother’s garage. Then one day, when age and Parkinson’s disease coaxed my mother into an assisted living community, I set about helping her move. In the process of downsizing, I rediscovered Dad’s office items in the garage. There, amongst some diplomas and dusty books, I found the framed meditation by Howard Thurman. I’d read it a few times as a boy but was too young to appreciate its meaning.I held it up to the light in the garage and read the entire document. Its wisdom immediately struck me. I was old enough now to appreciate it.I’d been working for several years, and was raising a boy. I knew something of responsibility, money woes and career fatigue. I experienced sacrifices and delayed plans.I guess I felt a bit like those hamsters. Working, going through the motions, but not feeling comletely alive. I wasn’t doing all the things I thought I’d be doing.I loved my family and was thankful to have a good job. But a part of me felt like my life was unremarkable. Insignificant. Just another cog in the wheel of humanity.Maybe you’ve felt this way before? Perhaps even now? So what do we do, when our spirits deflate and the responsibilities of life blur the significance of living? The quiet persistence in the  heartWe all want to matter. We want to know that our work and pursuits in life have purpose. Meaning. Significance. For some, there is no struggle. They find deep fulfillment in their work and families. But for many, their hearts are heavy. Maybe they hate their jobs, or feel stuck in life. How do we regain our significance for living? How do we recover that passion in our heart?Dream.I’m not talking about the dreams of slumber, although sometimes they will off er clues. Rather, I’m suggesting you spend some serious time remembering, or discovering your dreams.“Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard.” Anne SextonListen hard to your soul. What dreams are lurking deep inside, longing to be revived? Or discovered for the first time?Let’s return to that Howard Thurman meditation my Dad framed in his office. It was titled, “Keep Alive the Dream in the Heart.” Here are a few excerpts:“As long as a man has a dream in his heart, he cannot lose the significance of  living.” “Men cannot continue long to live if the dream in the heart has perished. It is then that they stop hoping, stop looking, and the last embers of their anticipations fade  away.”Dreams are immensely important in our lives. They don’t have to be “some great and overwhelming plan,” according to Thurman. We don’t have to change the world. But we do have to satisfy our hearts. As Thurman wrote:“The dream is the quiet persistence in the heart that enables a man to ride out the storms of his churning experiences. It is the exciting whisper moving through the aisles of his spirit answering the monotony of limitless days of dull routine. It is the ever-recurring melody in the midst of the broken harmony and harsh discords of human conflict. It is the touch of significance which highlights the ordinary experience, the common event.”What are your “touches of significance?” Those fulfilling pieces of the dream you have. My cartooning and painting were the “touches of signif icance” that kept me going during some difficult career years.Despite a successful, twenty-six year career in law enforcement, my dream was to become a full-time artist and writer. Except, I knew it would be unfair to my family to walk away from the salary and benefits my police career provided. So, I kept my creative dream alive by side-hustling. Evenings, early mornings and weekends allowed time to write, cartoon and paint. I kept the dream alive. I carved out time for my art, and it sustained me.“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” - Howard  ThurmanI worked hard but planned carefully. Eventually, I reached a point where I could afford to retire a few years early and become a full-time writer and artist.I held on to my dreams, and they held on to me.Uncomplicated joyA reader recently emailed me and shared the “uncomplicated joy” he felt watching his sons play soccer. H e may not be a famous artist, but he’s discovering an important truth:The joy of creative expression is its own  reward.Having dreams are vital in our lives, but they need not be dreams of fame and fortune. In fact, during my law enforcement years, just dreaming of my landscape painting was enough to fulfill me.I used to dream about my creative growth. Along the way, I’d take painting workshops and practice whenever time allowed. Breakthroughs were thrilling and gave me such a sense of significance and accomplishment.Becoming a famous artist wasn’t my dream so much as becoming an accomplished artist. I’m still learning and growing, but the dream sustains me.Finding the uncomplicated joy in your dream is a good start. Maybe you want to become a famous recording artist? Or a movie star?Nothing wrong with dreaming big. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find significance and uncomplicated joy in smaller achievements. It might be a great performance at an open mic night, or a l ocal play you performed in.  Castles in the  airEvery life is significant. Every life matters. A child cares not if her mother is rich and famous. She loves her mother as she is. The little boy may idolize Spiderman, but he loves his father more.Sometimes, we don’t give ourselves a break. We get down on ourselves and feel small and insignificant. We see magazines with beautiful people. We don’t look like them, so we think we don’t matter.Often, our culture gets it wrong and celebrates the superficial. Beauty, money, and fame. These things are not inherently bad but dig a little deeper. Maturity and wisdom will show you more important attributes. Like kindness, charity and love. There’s a splendid Tim McGraw song titled “Beautiful people.” It celebrates the beauty of ordinary people living significant lives. Like one guy in the song named Carl, who visits sick kids on Christmas, dressed as Santa Claus.Carl may not be rich. In fact, he’s missing a front tooth. But the sic k kids don’t mind that one bit. Because he’s taking the time to be Santa Claus for them. He’s giving of his time to enrich the lives of others. Now that’s beautiful. You knew how to dream when you were a kid. Remember? Heck, I dreamed of becoming a professional tennis player like my idol, Jimmy Connors. I didn’t become a tennis pro, but I did win tournaments and found great significance and personal joy in my tennis years. What’s long forgotten in your heart? What dream is buried within you? If none come to mind, then take Anne Sexton’s advice. Put your ear down close to your soul and listen hard.It matters not your position in life. All that matters is that you have a dream. That special something that quickens your heart and warms your spirit.Because a dream is always there with you, inspiring you to grow. To remind you that you’re significant. You matter.  â€œIf you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.” Henry David  ThoreauKeep dreaming. Build those “castles in the air” so you can keep an eye on them. Start crafting a life around those dreams. Carve out a little extra time in the mornings, evenings and weekends. Make it happen. You can do it.My Dad had dreams. Some of them came true. Others did not. Clearly, Howard Thurman’s wisdom was important to my father. It became important to me. Hopefully, it will become important to you, too. Good luck!“As long as a man has a dream in his heart, he cannot lose the significance of living.” Howard  ThurmanBefore you  goI’m John P.
